“After 20 Years of Overseas Medical Missions, I Plan to Devote the Next 10 Years Entirely to God”
There was once a boy who suffered through severe financial hardship at home. Believing that becoming a doctor would at least allow him to make a living, he devoted himself to his studies and eventually achieved his dream of becoming a physician.
A devout Christian, he became deeply interested in overseas mission work around the age of 40. What began with visits to one or two countries eventually grew into 20 years of volunteer service across 19 countries.
His mission work took him to places including Yanbian, the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and Fiji. He mainly provided surgery to people in developing countries and impoverished communities while sharing the gospel.
Through his medical work, many cataract patients who had been at risk of losing their sight because they could not afford treatment were able to see the world clearly again. Some also came to embrace the Christian faith.
He is now preparing to return to the mission field, determined to dedicate the next decade of his life entirely to the Lord. Having prepared for this mission for several years, he will be ready to depart as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end.
This is the story of Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, Chief Director of JC Bitsomang Eye Clinic in Yeouido, Seoul. With 10 doctors and approximately 100 staff members, the clinic has earned a reputation as one of Korea’s leading eye care institutions.
