2014 Medical Mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo
In March 2014, the medical team from JC BITSOMANG EYE CLINIC in Yeouido traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Good People for an overseas medical mission.
We recently received photographs from Good People capturing memorable moments from the mission.
On March 3, 2014, members of JC BITSOMANG EYE CLINIC and Good People departed for the Democratic Republic of the Congo to provide free cataract surgeries.
Everyone began the journey with energy and determination.
After the long flight, cataract surgeries began the following morning.
Many local residents had already gathered and were waiting from early in the day.
At the time, the region had very limited access to both the medical equipment and physicians needed to perform cataract surgery. As a result, many people—including older adults and even young children—were living with vision loss caused by untreated cataracts.
For this reason, the medical mission team transported all the necessary surgical equipment and supplies from Korea and set up a temporary surgical environment on site.
To provide treatment to as many patients as possible, surgeries began early each morning.
Dr. Gyung Bai Choi performed cataract surgeries with dedication throughout the mission.
From March 3 through March 9, the medical staff of JC BITSOMANG EYE CLINIC and the Good People team worked tirelessly together.
By the end of the mission, a total of 61 patients had successfully undergone cataract surgery.
