A Next-Generation Refractive Extended Depth-of-Focus (EDOF) Intraocular Lens Designed to Extend Near Vision to 40 cm

In August 2026, Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, Founder and Medical Director of JC BITSOMANG Eye Clinic ,

successfully performed Korea’s first clinical surgery using LUX LIFE,

a next-generation intraocular lens developed by the global eye care company Bausch + Lomb.

With over 32 years of extensive clinical experience and expertise since its establishment in 1994,

JC Bright Hope Eye Center continues to expand treatment options for presbyopia and cataracts by introducing advanced intraocular lens technologies.

The newly introduced LUX LIFE is a next-generation intraocular lens designed with refractive optical technology to provide a continuous range of vision from distance to intermediate and near.

Conventional extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) lenses have offered stable distance and intermediate vision with relatively low levels of visual disturbances,

such as halos and glare. However, they have generally had limitations in near vision performance.

In particular, patients may experience blurred vision when reading small print or using smartphones at distances closer than 50 cm,

often requiring reading glasses or other visual aids.

In contrast, LUX LIFE is designed to extend functional near vision to approximately 40 cm while maintaining a smooth and continuous range of vision through intermediate and distance.

Its optical design takes into consideration various visual demands in everyday life,

including smartphone use, reading, computer work, driving, and outdoor activities.

Additionally, LUX LIFE incorporates Bausch + Lomb’s PRO (Pure Refractive Optics) technology and ART (Allied Ray Technology) zone,

designed to utilize light energy efficiently.

The lens is designed to reduce visual disturbances, including halos and glare, which may occur with conventional diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses,

while providing an extended range of vision from near to distance.

Notably, its optical design may also allow functional vision at close distances of approximately 33 cm.

However, actual visual acuity and quality of vision may vary depending on individual factors, including corneal and retinal health,

astigmatism, pupil size, and postoperative refractive status.

Therefore, the same level of near visual acuity or spectacle independence cannot be guaranteed for every patient.

JC BITSOMANG Eye Clinic remains committed to providing high-quality,

personalized presbyopia and cataract surgery through comprehensive preoperative examinations and individualized intraocular lens selection based on each patient’s unique ocular condition.
