Good People, an international relief and development NGO chaired by Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, announced on July 27 that it had appointed its 11th chairman and held a leadership transition ceremony. The event was conducted on a limited scale in strict compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines.
Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, Chief Director of JC Bitsomang Eye Clinic, was inaugurated as Good People’s 11th chairman. He succeeded outgoing Chairman Kim Cheon-su, who completed his term after leading the organization for six years.
Former Chairman Kim Cheon-su, Good People’s 10th chairman, said,
“Over the past six years, I have worked tirelessly toward our dream of creating a better world, sharing both tears and laughter with people living in poverty and social isolation, our donors, and the staff of Good People.”
He added, “It was an honor to take part in this meaningful work, and I sincerely thank everyone who trusted and supported me despite my shortcomings.”
Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, the newly appointed 11th chairman, said, “I feel the weight of taking on such an important position during a difficult time, but that weight also gives me an equally strong sense of responsibility.”
He continued, “I will reflect deeply on the true meaning of service and sharing and do my utmost to ensure that Good People remains a transparent, trustworthy, and well-managed organization in which our donors can have confidence.”
Chairman Choi graduated from Chung-Ang University College of Medicine in 1986 and opened JC Bitsomang Eye Clinic, now located in Yeouido, in 1994. Driven by a strong sense of calling toward medical service, he has actively participated in medical outreach programs in Korea and overseas as an ophthalmologist since 1999.
Since 2004, he has worked in partnership with Good People to provide medical services, including free sight-restoring and cataract surgeries, to approximately 2,500 patients in nearly 20 countries, including China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Fiji.
In 2008, he received the 24th Boryung Medical Service Award. In recognition of his dedicated and selfless service, he was also presented with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Award at the 4th Korea Overseas Volunteer Awards in 2009.
He has also served as Vice Chairman of Good People’s medical programs since 2009. In 2019, he joined the Good People Honors Club, a group of major donors, setting an example of positive social impact through giving.
