On November 25, KBS Good Morning Live aired a segment on retinal vascular occlusion, featuring Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, Chief Director of JC Bitsomang Eye Clinic, as a medical consultant. Sometimes described as an “eye stroke,” retinal vascular occlusion occurs when a blood vessel in the retina becomes blocked, potentially causing retinal bleeding and vision loss.
Possible symptoms include blurred or distorted vision, difficulty seeing clearly, letters appearing smeared or unclear, and visual disturbances similar to floaters.
Compared with a healthy retina, an affected retina may show areas of hemorrhage caused by the blocked blood vessel.
This bleeding can interfere with vision. Because early symptoms may not be obvious, patients may mistake the condition for ordinary vision deterioration or floaters. However, delayed treatment may lead to the formation of abnormal new blood vessels, further bleeding, or neovascular glaucoma. In severe cases, these complications can be difficult to treat and may result in irreversible vision loss.
Although damaged retinal tissue may not fully recover, regular examinations and appropriate ongoing treatment—including laser therapy or intraocular injections when indicated—may help preserve existing vision and prevent further deterioration. Anyone experiencing sudden vision loss, blurred or distorted vision, or new floaters should receive a prompt ophthalmic examination.
