Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, Director of JC Bitsomang Eye Clinic, speaks with Kukmin Ilbo during an interview in his consultation room at the clinic in Yeouido, Seoul, on May 22.
JC Bitsomang Eye Clinic, led by Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, is well known for its specialized presbyopia and cataract surgeries. Within the Christian community, however, it is even better known as a clinic committed to medical missions. The clinic conducts medical service missions at least three times a year and, in some years, more than ten times.
The clinic works in partnership with Good People, an international relief and development NGO, and recently visited Shinan County in South Jeolla Province with the E-Land Foundation. Its medical teams also frequently travel overseas.
Since 1999, Dr. Choi and his medical teams have carried out missions in 19 countries, including China’s Yanbian region, the Philippines, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and Fiji in the South Pacific. In Yanbian in particular, the clinic worked with Seogu Hospital, an affiliated hospital of Yanbian University, to conduct 60 medical service missions over a period of ten years.
Dr. Gyung Bai Choi, 58, whom Kukmin Ilbo met at JC Bitsomang Eye Clinic in Yeouido, Seoul, on May 22, said, “In two years, when I turn 60, I plan to be formally commissioned to an overseas mission field and serve as a medical missionary for ten years. I want to dedicate a defining part of my life to God.”
